From Metamaterial-Based to Metamaterial-Inspired Miniaturized Antennas: a Possible Procedure and Some Examples

چکیده
In this contribution, we present the procedure employed by our research group to go from metamaterial-based to metamaterial-inspired miniaturized antennas. The concepts of microwave metamaterial-based and metamaterialinspired antennas and components are firstly reviewed. Then, we address the main issues to tackle when going from metamaterial-based to metamaterial-inspired miniaturized antennas. The first issue is related to the anisotropy of the inclusions, which is not usually considered in the preliminary analysis of metamaterial-based antennas. The solution of this issue is given in terms of a deep, though approximated, analysis of the near field distribution of the antennas. The second issue is related to the dimensions of the inclusions, which should be much smaller than the operating wavelength. The solution in this case is found in the miniaturization of the isolated inclusions through different methods. Finally, the third issue is related to the definition of the constitutive parameters of the sample made of a given arrangement of inclusions. An operative solution of this issue is related to the comparison between the transmission and reflection properties of the inclusion-made and the ideal isotropic metamaterial sample. A few design examples are also presented to show the procedure proposed through the paper.

A Systematic Approach to Photonic Crystal Based Metamaterial Design
Photonic crystal design procedure for negative refraction has so far been based on trial and error. In this paper, for the first time, a novel and systematic design procedure based on physical and mathematical properties of photonic crystals is proposed to design crystal equi-frequency contours (EFCs) to produce negative refraction. The EFC design is performed by the help of rectangular stair-c...

متن کاملA Novel Compact Dual Notch Band Filter Based on Metamaterial Concept
Using composite right-left handed (CRLH) transmission line concept, a novel miniaturized dual notch band filter (DNBF) is proposed. The suggested DNBF consists of an interdigital transmission line (ITL), split ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs). Since the resonance frequency of the SRRs and CSRRs are quite independent of each other, the dual notch bands of th...
متن کاملMicrostrip Antenna Gain Enhancement using Near Zero Refractive Index Metamaterials
Some useful features of microstrip patch antennas are low profile, low weight and easy fabrication. However this type of antenna suffers from having a low gain, caused by propagation surface waves. In this paper, a new near zero refractive index metamaterial (MTM) unit cell is designed and fabricated as a superstrate over a Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antennas (RMPA). In order to obtain a maxi...
متن کاملEfficient Isolation between Electrically Small Metamaterial-Inspired Monopole Antennas
In this paper, a new electrically small metamaterial-inspired monopole antenna is presented. It consists of a simple square-shaped coplanar waveguide (CPW-fed) monopole with an embedded complementary split ring resonator (CSRR). It operates at three distinct frequency ranges around 2.45, 4.2, and 5.8GHz, with low return loss and uniform radiation patterns, making it a perfect candidate for mode...
